How to Move My Documents
Moving the Windows My Documents folder is one of the more challenging tasks I have faced. Perhaps it's because I've only performed the task three or four times, with many months, or years in-between. Well, if I have trouble doing it, I think you will. So feel free to follow these instructions:
CAUTION: These instructions will NOT move your user profile. If you need to have work done on your computer, always copy ALL of the content of your User Profile to a CD to prevent loss of critical data!
To move the Windows My Documents folder:
- Right-click the My Documents icon on the Windows Desktop and select Properties from the drop-down menu that appears. The My Documents Properties dialog box appears.
- Click Move in the My Documents Properties dialog box. The Select a Destination dialog box appears.
- Navigate to the location on your hard drive, or another hard disk, where you want to move My Documents. If desired you can create a new folder and then select it as the new location for My Documents--you do not have to have the name "My Documents" for the My Documents folder.
- Click OK. A Move Documents message box appears.
- Do one of the following:
- Click Yes to move your documents to the new location.
- Click No to keep your documents in the old location, and begin fresh in the new location. If you select this option, don't forget how to get to all of the documents you have already saved here!
