People often come to me with this problem: They are scrolling through their document when suddenly, the headers, footers, or page numbers disappear.
Quick Solution: Video
Quick Solution: Text
The most common cause of this issue was an accidental click on the bottom border of your document. It is quickly solved by looking for this light line, indicating a new page.
It may have a slightly different look in different versions of Word, but it’s there. If you rest your cursor on the line, you will see two arrows pointing in opposite directions; a tool tip may also appear telling you to double-click to show or hide the white space. You see, Word calls your top and bottom margins “white space.”
Just double-click this line and the full display of your page is restored. Here is the footer that had been hidden from view. Click it again, to hide these margins.
Why Did It Happen?
Often, if you are working a lot on a document, you may not notice an accidental double-click on the margin.
This “Double-Click” to show or hide “white space” is a useful feature in MS Word—if you know about the feature—but if not, it can be frustrating. It is useful when you have a really long document and are focused only on the content. Page numbers and fancy headers or footers can be distracting. So you can double-click the bottom of the page to completely hide from view the entire top and bottom margin of your document.
Your Tip Didn’t Work
There are other reasons why your header/footer/page numbers might seem to disappear, but usually there are additional symptoms, for example a change in the way your document is displayed.
In this case, you may have accidentally clicked the wrong button at the bottom of the screen or on the View tab of MS Word. To get the display back to normal, click the Print Layout button on the View tab or the icon at the bottom of the screen (middle arrow).
